Position: Registered Nurse- Shift Leader Department: Care and Wellness

Scope of the job:

The Professional Registered Nurse forms part of the care team and is involved and responsible for 

the overall holistic care of residents within the Auria Community. Supervision of all categories of staff 

on shift. Provides clinical and professional leadership and support to the care team in delivering safe 

and quality resident care and support that promotes and meets the intellectual, emotional, social, 

and physical needs of residents.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Provides professional nursing care by utilising all elements of the nursing process.

• Assesses and evaluate resident’s status by:

o writing and initiating individual care plans,

o Regularly re-evaluating resident’s needs,

o Implement revised care strategy to improve or maintain resident’s health status.

• Initiates and sustains the implementation of orders for medications, management and all 

treatments as prescribed by the treating physician.

• Initiates and applies appropriate preventative, therapeutic and rehabilitative nursing 

procedures and techniques and maintain communication regarding client care with the 

doctors/specialist, allied professionals, family, and staff.

• Record, maintains and submits accurate and relevant clinical notes regarding resident’s 

health status and care requirements. Submit documentation on time.

• Accurately record and report all health condition changes to the Care Manger and care team.

• Use supplies, consumables, and equipment effectively and efficiently.

• Assists the client with all Activities of Daily living and facilitates efforts for self-sufficiency and 

independence.

• Provides ongoing education on disease process, medication, diet, safety and utilizes 

opportunities for health counselling with residents, families, and care staff.

• Provides and maintains a safe environment for the residents.

• Works in cooperation with the family and care staff to meet physical, emotional, social, 

spiritual, and environmental needs of the resident and make referrals as appropriate.

• Ensure regular in-service training session to all care staff and other Auria staff members e.g. 

first aid to Food and Beverage team.

• Manage Emergency Procedures.

• Supervise ancillary personnel and delegates responsibilities when required

• Performs services within the limits of preparation and experience within the scope of 

practice regulated by SANC.

• Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development to maintain and upgrades 

professional knowledge and practise skills through attendance and participation in 

continuing education and in-service training.

• Takes responsibility for the on-call system, rotating through on-call duty schedule as needed.

• Fulfils the obligation of requested and/or accepted case assignments.

• Maintain client confidentiality.

• Attending HOD meetings, MDTs, daily care team handovers and advocating for the residents.

Requirements:

• Diploma/Degree in Nursing with working knowledge of medications and procedures.

• Valid practice license through the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

• At least five years general nursing experience in a clinical area i.e., Medical Surgery, 

Oncology, Surgical, ICU and Geriatric experience.

• Have satisfactory references from previous (or current) employer and/or professional peers.

• Computer literate 

• Good knowledge and understanding of the Older Persons Act and the Mental Health Act

• Valid Driver’s Licence

• Up to date BLS certificate
